Podocarpus Bonsai of 27 years

Common Name: Podocarpus

Scientific name: Podocarpus spp

Characterization: From China and Korea, it belongs to the family of the Podocarpaceae.

Tree of perennial leaves, long ovals, bright dark green color, arranged in spiral around the branches.

In Bonsai 2 varieties are used one of larger leaf (about 5 to 8 cm long) and the variety "Maki" of smaller leaf (3 to 5 cm).

It is a dioic plant with male and female flowers in separate trees, has no easy differentiation.

After flowering in shades of yellow (in the spring), some females manage to bear fruit, a berries of bold color similar to a grape, and the same is edible.

Vulgarly known as "Buddha Island" is widely used in Japanese Gardens, whether in hedges or even in shade trees (can reach the 20 meters) and Feng Shui lovers attribute many positive properties to it.

Location: Although they point as an interior plant, in our climate you must live abroad, always well exposed to the sun, where you take 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day (ideal in the morning or at the end of the day), protected from strong winds and frosts.

Only in cases of extreme frosts and prolonged temperature drops (below 0°C) would we have to temporarily protect it.

Water: To water abundantly the earth until a lot of water goes out through the drain holes in order to moisten evenly the soil, always above never by immersion, with a fine drain waterer.

Let dry slightly the surface layer of the soil between each watering (to confirm if the plant already needs water, touch the earth with the fingers).

If you have a dish under Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).

There is no advantage in spraying the leaves, just do it in days that it adds and if the fertilizer is specific for foliar application, but ensure that they arrive dry at night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to October/November, with a base plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), can still be linked with other products in our range.

Poda: It is made above a spiral of leaves trying not to cut them in half, the pruning can be done at any time of the year, as it again does well the rebrotation after the pruning (back budding), and compact very well.

Transplantation: Although it is a conifer, it is used Terra Bonsai Folhosas in February/March, before the start of the budding.

When transplanting there are small balls along the root, it is no problem, but a symbiotic relationship between the plant and a fungus, which facilitates the capture, fixation and assimilation of nitrogen.
