THE ALLIANCE
PHALAENOPSIS AND ITS HYBRIDS

Origin -
Of all orchids, this species is the most cultivated around the world and originates from the tropical zones of the Asian Southwest.

There are hybrids of thousands of colors and various sizes, we describe some :

Mini - plants about 20 cm tall, in case of the Phalaenopsis Calimero or the Litle Lady.

Multiflora - with flowers between 3 and 5 cm, but as the name indicates many flowers per stem.

Standard - They are the most common, with a height between 55 and 75 cm and flowers of approximately 6 to 8 cm in diameter.

Grandiflora -with about 1 meter and flowers with more than 12 cm.

There are also some naturally fragrant like the Liodoro Phalaenopsis, others in which special dyes are given to them to have colors outside the common, if the Royal Blues (there are also in other colors being the blue one of the most appreciated).

Finally they can be cultivated in Kokedama, or with the exposed roots, can be mounted on cork plates, or even the floral stem be tutored to give them original shape.

Luminosity - They like light but without direct sun, it is the perfect plant to be kept at home, in a window or illuminated place. Tropical greenhouses are also ideal.

Temperature and Humidity - Ideal to keep in heated houses, do not like temperatures below 18oC or above 28oC. In warmer days we should spray the leaves to increase moisture and avoid dehydration. Also the buttons of the unopened flowers should be sprayed if the air is too dry or may have difficulties opening.

Pots and substrate – All Phalaenopsis are epiphytic plants but only smaller species are cultivated mounted in cork, in Kokedama, or even in the styles of exposed roots.

They are usually grown in transparent plastic vessels where the roots can receive light as they would receive if they were attached to a tree trunk. The substrate for these plants is Terra Orquídeas Epífitas

Watering and Fertilization -The waterings in the warmest season should be done twice a week. The rest of the year just water once a week. We should not water if the temperature drops below 16oC. The waterings are made so that the roots are wet but we avoid watering the leaves of the plant.

We can submerge the vase in a bucket with water for a few minutes or we water carefully to never wet the inside of the leaves, in the center of the plant.

Transparent plastic vessels also help to check when it is necessary to water by observing the color of the roots. If these are green, they are still wet and we should not water. If they are silver, they are dry and should be watered.

Fertilization should be done fortnightly, we use Nutri Orquídeas Humic Crescimento when the plant is producing new roots or leaves (after cutting the floral stem) and we switch to Nutri Orquídeas Humic Floração so we see a new floral stem breaking into the leaves armpits.

We should apply the whole year Vital Orquídeas Activ fortnightly, it can be applied in the same watering that the fertilizers (respecting the doses of both to 1 liter of water) or separately (alternate 1 week add another fortifying).
