Nowadays, the “Stone Lanterns”, are essential elements in the creation of “Japanese Gardens”.

The “Stone Lanterns” or “Ishi–Doro” were originally developed in China and later taken to Japan.

Initially they served to illuminate the exterior of temples, they were also assigned the powers of spiritual protection and enlightenment.

Its main function was to “conduct” the guests through the garden, to the room where the “Cerimonia of Tea” was held.

Usually used as a focal point in the garden, they are minimalist artistic expressions of Zen Buddhism.

Their rusticity and sobriety of lines allow them to fit both outside and interior decorations.

In addition to flashlights, there are several other decorations such as “water base”, bridges, “Steping Stones”, etc., all of them following the “East Philosophies”.

Although with multiple derivations and sizes, the “Stone Lanterns” can be divided into 4 Basic styles:

TACHI-GATA – pedestal flashlights

IKEKOMI-GATA – Buried flashlights

OKI-GATA – Small Lanterns

YUKUMI-GATA – Snow Lanterns
